What obstetric care covers

Obstetric care is the care offered to you during the pregnancy, birth and thereafter. It continues through your antenatal visits, your birth, and your recovery afterwards.

Every pregnancy is different. Some need extra monitoring, and some do not go the way you hoped. Dr Mahadik provides regular checks, explains what each stage involves, and is there for all your pregnancy needs. If your pregnancy becomes higher risk, she coordinates care with a multidisciplinary team.

Common questions

Obstetric care — common questions

To claim a Medicare rebate for a specialist visit, you need a referral from your GP. You can see an obstetrician without one, but the visit will not attract a rebate. A GP referral usually lasts 12 months from your first appointment. Your GP can refer you to Dr Mahadik, and can also share your history so your first visit is a good use of your time. You can read more on the book an appointment page.

It helps to see your GP as soon as you know you are pregnant. Your GP arranges the first blood tests and an early ultrasound, and can refer you on. Many women have their first obstetric appointment at 10 weeks. If you have a health condition or have had a difficult pregnancy before, it is worth being seen early. Dr Mahadik offers pre-pregnancy planning as well, if you are still getting ready.

Both look after you in pregnancy, but in different ways. A midwife is trained to support you through pregnancy, labour, birth and the early weeks, usually when things are straightforward. An obstetrician is a doctor with extra training in pregnancy and birth, including births that need closer care or surgery, such as a caesarean. The two often work together, and Dr Mahadik works alongside the midwives and staff at the hospitals where she cares for patients.

With private obstetric care, you see the same obstetrician through your pregnancy. This means one person gets to know you and your history. Dr Mahadik provides your antenatal care, keeps an eye on you and your baby, and plans ahead for your birth with you.

Some pregnancies need closer care. This can be because of diabetes, high blood pressure, or a health condition you had before pregnancy. Dr Mahadik provides care for higher-risk pregnancies, with extra monitoring and clear guidance. If your baby needs specialist newborn care, this is planned ahead where possible.

Fees depend on the care you need, so it is best to ask the rooms directly. A Medicare rebate applies to many services when you have a GP referral, and your private health fund may cover part of your hospital stay. It is worth checking your cover early in your pregnancy. The book an appointment page explains how to get started.

Yes. Some families kindly agree to share a photo of their baby, with their permission, and you can see these on Dr Mahadik’s Instagram.
